May 30th - Anise's Big Debut!!

My day started out doing the norm...Getting up at 4am to
go after the elusive tom...

I found one right down in the normal spot but he was on the
opposite side of the power line right near the neighbors line...

There is a small stretch of trees along the power line and then
its open due to cutting that was done a few years back...

I sat and got him to gobble frequently while in the roost and
just like clock work he came down around 515am...

Except he flew down the opposite direction!

I instantly knew what he was going to do...Head up to the mountain
going around the fenceline in the woods like Ive been observing
them doing...

So I got up fast and headed up to the mountain...I parked at
the bottom and walk in fast trying to get in front of him...

I heard him gobble twice and my suspicions were right...I
walked as carful down the log road as I coud trying to get to the
corner ahead of him...And I thought I did...But he must have
spotted me because as I was close to the corner, I tried to
get him to gobble and he was gone...I could not believe it!

So hunting was done from there becasue today was Anise's
big debut with her dance recital...I picked mom and April
up and we headed to Mt Markham to watch...

Anise's aunt Leeanne is her teacher and she has quite a studio...
Her mom told me that she has 76 students and all but 4 are from
little Edmeston...They did jazz, tap, ballet, gymnastic style, and
contemporary style dancing...The kids all did great...

Anise had 1 dance and it was called "Take A Bow"...I'll let
the video tell you how she did...She will be right in the middle
of the frame...

The final dance...She is the one on the very left...

Anise did AWESOME!!!  So very proud of her...She worked hard at this
and did an amazing job and you could tell she loved doing it...

Anise, Brie, cousin Chloe and Aunt Leeanne (her teacher)...

Look at that smile!!

Very proud mom and dad...

This one caught my eye...Brie smelling Anise's flowers...lol

May 29th - Busy Day

Started out the day by going back out to hunt...Only
3 days left...

I heard toms right off the bat down behind my cousins
so headed to sit right near them as close as I could get...

I did pretty good and had them gobbling pretty intensely...
It helped having a hen with them getting them all fired up...
There was at least 2 toms there...

I expected them to come up the trail but alas they fooled me
again...Unlike normal where they come out of the roost around
520am, they stayed up till 550am...

When they hit the ground the toms went dead quiet...I had the
hen yelp once 10 minutes later more to my right and once I
shifted over 90 degrees, in about 5 minutes out of the corner of
my eye I saw a bird on the next ridge making his way to the power
line about 60 yards away...

Like the past, this group of 4 birds (3 toms) were on a mission
and only looked around when I made sound but never would
come in...

Bill was coming to start the graveling of the entrance road and
hunting was done by 8am...No other birds...

Bill and Jamie started to cut the bank at the bottom of my drive
way and to Bills surprise there was quite a bit of topsoil there...

1st scoop-full...

1st load...

Within the 1st 2 loads Jamie hit an old water line that heads towards
Darrowsville...1.5 inch line and mom thinks it went over to the
old Cooper house or barn...Its about 3 feet below the surface and
was put in long before all the trees grew up on this hill 70 some years
ago...

We worked around it until we knew for sure what it was and by
the end of the day, Bill drew 9 loads out...2 from up top near the
house to help make my turn-around bigger for when I have the
trailer...

The road looks nice and is definitely a nice improvement...We have
rain coming over the next 7 days so this will be a nice test to see the
low spots so we can do some touching up down the road...

End result at bottom of my driveway...

This is where the 2 loads came from that had a little more "grit" to it for traction...
This will help with my turn around area by the garage...

Stumps and any soil Bill couldnt use went into the "bowl" to start filling that
in...

 Top of the entrance road...

Lets go for a ride!

We also did a quick fix up with one load of gravel over Charlie and Vie's
brook crossing...They have been so great to us over the years letting us
use their access onto the back lot...

While that all was going on my topsoil came (2 for the front and
1 load for the firepit area)...

By the end of the day I got the firepit area all spread out and ready for seed...
I have extra and will take that out for the front lawn..This is where I had to
repair the bank when the big pine by the house was taken down...The tree
broke the bank when it went over into the "hole"...I also needed to get some
dirt on top where Bill ground down the stump...

After Bill left I went down to out cages around the Hosta so the deer
stay off it for now...Want to let those grow some for the fall...When I
got down there, there was a big doe on the salt lick not paying any
attention to me...She let me shut my truck off, get out of the truck,
get stuff out of the bed and walk up the mound next to the road towards
her and she didnt hardly flinch...I was pounding stakes and she finally
headed off...Ive seen deer act like this before when its really hot but
it really wasnt that hot or humid yesterday...

When I left there I went up to the mountain to place out another
salt lick and there was a turkey acting the same way...Didnt pay me
any attention or anything even when I was up there making all
kinds of noise...Really weird actions...

Last project of the night was to take some time and start to take down
the sheetrock in the dining room...In about an hour I had almost all of
it off except some on the studs and ceiling area...It got to dark for me to
see plus I wanted the air to settle down before bed...I rigged up a fan
for blowing air out of the house and to draw all the dust in one direction
so it doesn go everywheres...It seemed to work pretty good...

Time for a shower and bed...

May 28th - Oh those turkeys!

The morning was a complete bust...The birds have gone
completely silent...So I didnt stay out too long since I have
so much going on the next couple days and the lawn looks
crappy!  Plus it was 61 dregrees out but the humidity was
near 100% and I was dripping with sweat with just a t-shirt
on...

I spent the rest of the morning lining up my topsoil delivery
and getting the John Deer 110 backhoe set up for the weekend
so I can begin to get the front lawn landscapped...

By mid morning I decided to get the food plots done with
Frigid Forage Wild Game Buffet on one of them and Eagle
Seed soybeans on the other...Got some rain coming this week
so a good time to do it...

On my way up to the plots I turned the corner of the driveway
and right on the slope heading up towards Ralphs is a big ole
tom standing right in the road...As I got close he headed towards
the flats...I turned around at Ralphs and noticed he was back
in the road but heading to the power lines...

I had my gun with me so decided to try to do an ambush on the
power line...I had no camo on and only the mouth call I learned
to use while in VA; and I had about 45 minutes before legal
shooting ended, which is noon, so this was going to be an interesting
experiment...

I got in place and yelped; and got him to gobble but he was way
down towards my house still...In 10 minutes he and the hen with
him had gotten right up near me..This was going to work!

Then the worst thing that could happen...Did!  My mouth completly
forgot how to blow the call...Here I had been practing for over
2 weeks and could do all the calls and now this!  I thought I was
doomed...

Because I was on the opposite side of the power line road, I
couldnt see over the bank so really didnt know where he was
at...Thus didnt know where he was going to pop out and who was
going to pop out first...And I couldnt call so I was at his mercy...

Less then a minute later I see this head come out over the weeds
looking to my right...All I could see was his head and top of his neck...

HE WAS 6 FEET AWAY!!

But because his neck wasnt really visable I couldnt tell if it was
the tom or the hen...One more step up the bank is all I could think
about...

Then he turned and looked right at me and instantly he popped right
up in the air and took off...I still cant say for sure if it was the tom
or the hen but based on what size looked like Im sure it was the tom...

Lessons learned:
1.  Always keep your gun in the truck until end of shooting time,
2.  Always have at least your face mask and gloves in the truck, and
3.  Always have your calls in the truck.
4.  Turkeys have AMAZING eye sight...This bird picked me out even
though I was against a bank f saplings, briers and weeds.

This was a big confidence booster even if it didnt end with a bird
down...This showed me I could call a turkey in even without being
an expert...

Another fun day!

May 17-27 Virginia Beach Trip

My trip to Va Bch was great...Got to see my godsons family...
Played A LOT of golf...Daily!

Over the Memorial Day weekend I got to run to NC and see
both Kay to visit with her for a few hours and also got a golf
game in with Kent...I kept up wth him the first 9 holes and was
even a head in the beginning but my game fell off the last 9
and didnt seem to recover the rest of my time down south...

School was OK but was nothing more then attending to say
I had been there...I already had done the test that everyone
else had to do, so they let me go a day and a half early which
was cool!

Now I should be totally ready for the new job but still have not
been able to get a hold of the union rep to find out whats next...

At least my Coast Guard package is in and that will take about
a month to process...

Now its just a waiting game...

May 16th 2015 - Fun Day!

After an exciting hunting morning I finished packing my truck and headed over to Jodi's ball game against Warrensburg.

North Warren Cougars.  Proud of these young ladies!

Jodi behind the plate.  Nice posture!

Jodi at bat.  A sluggers stance!!

May 15th 2015 - Another Lazy Hunter

I found out that Jodi had a real important game Sat against
Warrensburg (their only loss of the season) so I decided to
delay going to VA by a day wich also gave me 2 extra days
to hunt.  :-)

Today was final packing, cleaning and dump day.

May 14th 2015 - Lazy Hunters

The remaining of my day was spent cleaning up and getting
ready for my trip to VA.

Cousin Jodi had an away game at Hadley-Lazern and I went out to
see that game where they won 25-5.  Cousin Jodi had an awesome
HR in the game!

May 13th 2015 - A Game Of Inches

After hunting for the day I started to tear the dining room
apart...I got the bottom clapboards, baseboards, trim and
top molding all taken down.  I was hoping to get the sheet
rock off as well but that will have to be for another day.

When I went into the garage I discovered what my grondhog had done
with all that dirt when he dug under...

Hard to see but he had half my ladder buried.

After a long hard day I decided to fire up my new
firepit that just came in the mail today.
